BEBOP - The Sound That Transformed Jazz - A QuickDime Review! I know this was a 2011 release, but I have enjoyed it so much I had to add my ten cents and give it a quick review. This was the start of this insanely great streak of mixes you guys have been on the last few months. Bebop is an uptempo style of jazz, defined on improvisation, based on the combination of harmonic structure and melody. This compilation brings you some cornerstone definitions of bop, including legendary Jazz icon Dizzy Gillespie’s “Salt Peanuts” and Bud Powell’s rollicking piano bebop of “Tempus Fugue It”. Another quintessential cut from this mix comes from the bebop super group called The Quintet (Dizzy Gillespie, Charlie Parker, Bud Powell, Charles Mingus & Max Roach) with their speedy “Wee”, flashing hats, horn stabs and rollicking piano again layout what bop is defined as. The great thing about these types of compilations for me is I’m always introduced to someone or something new. In this case Gene Ammons is someone new to me. I have never heard his horntastic “New Blues Up & Down” with Sonny Stitt, the same can be said for the Duke Jordan Quintet, with their island flavored “Cu-Ba”. But I digress, if you’re looking for a fantastic compilation with Bebop heroes like Dizzy, Chet & The Bird you can stop looking. Highly recommend. ~! January 30, 2012
