Tazo and Mercy Corps have partnered together for the Community Health and Advancement Initiative (CHAI) Project, an integrated tea supply chain effort to help improve the health and quality of life for people living in the Darjeeling and Assam regions in India and in Guatemalan cardamom-growing villages. Since it began in 2002, the program has impacted more than 30,000 people from 39 rural communities.

The Crush, Tear and Curl (CTC) Method is used to make black teas with bold flavors and a strong body that pairs well with spices, milk and sweeteners. The process begins the same way as orthodox black tea production, but instead of extensive rolling and sorting, the CTC method relies on a machine to crush and tear the tea leaves into a uniform size and shape. This leads to a faster and less complex oxidation process, and results in a tea that quickly brews thick, dark liquor. Tazo® Chai concentrates and beverages use CTC tea.
