Kaʻu is a region on the Big Island of Hawaii, neighboring the highly acclaimed Kona growing region. In Kaʻu, small coffee farms sit on the southwest slopes of Mauna Loa, nestled in verdant valleys where they are tended predominantly by former sugar plantation owners. The Hawaii Kaʻu region is newly recognized among the finest coffees in the world, winning the 2011 SCAA Coffee of the Year award.

Of the thousands of coffees we encounter in our search for the best, only a precious few are deemed exceptional enough to become Starbucks Reserve® coffees, offered only for limited times at select stores.

Thin and insipid Nothing surprising here; Catuai is known for producing a lot of coffee beans, not for a superior cup. Same varietal grown and machine harvested on Kauai (which goes for a tenth of the price of Kona.) Coffee cupped as thin, insipid and lacking body. With milk, it is passible (compared to the regular Starbucks over-roasted coffee) but not worth a premium price. February 1, 2013
Not enough flavor I was surprised by this coffee since Hawaiian coffees I have had in the pass tasted good. This one on the other hand had little flavor to it. December 11, 2012
A bit disappointing I was a bit disappointed in this reserve. While I typically add cream and sugar to my coffee, when trying a new type I taste it without adding anything. I didn't notice coconut or caramel at all - mostly nut, which isn't bad if thats what you are looking for. Sadly, I don't believe I'd order this again. December 9, 2012
Even Grandpa liked it My Father in law came up for Thanksgiving from a small small town. I served him this coffee in the morning with breakfast everyday. One day I wasn't home in the morning to make the coffee. My Mother in law grabbed another brand of coffee I had to make him. He only drank one cup and refused anymore cause it wasn't the kind I had been making. That's quit a compliment coming from an old retired 30 years in the US Navy Master Chief! November 25, 2012
Extremely Delicious! This Ka'u coffee is delicious! It has a deep, earthy aroma that smells great. Once you taste it you get notes of citrus, toasted nuts and it finishes with caramel. This is a really exceptional coffee. I love the fact that this coffee is an American product all the way from the soil to the cup. Just another example of the fine quality of American artisans and craftsmen. November 23, 2012
